Summer at Red

Summer in Rossland is just as cherished as wintertime. We enjoy warm temperatures and sunny skies most of the summer season, and with a wide variety of activities for you, your family and friends to participate in, Rossland is truly an outdoor playground. British Columbia's natural resources include mountain trails, lakes, and forests replete with greenery and wildflowers. On top of that, golfing, biking (both mountain and road), and ATV'ing are very popular here. In addition, Rossland's mountain biking trails are world famous and include the Seven Summits Trail which was named “Trail of the Year” by Bike Magazine.

Mountain Biking

Voted in the top 10 of "Adventure Towns" by National Geographic Magazine, Rossland is one of the best mountain biking destinations. The natural terrain and beauty of the Kootenays, combined with mild summer weather makes for a biking experience that one cannot forget. The trails in the area are maintained by the Kootenay-Columbia Trails Society. The Society is a not-for-profit organization and maintains 32 trails covering 170kms in the Rossland Range You can keep up to date on the Society by visiting Stew Spooner's blog here: http://rosslandtrails.wordpress.com/. A community bulletin board is also available at Bike Rossland - http://www.bikerossland.ca.

A trail map of the area and other information are available through the KCTS website here, http://www.rosslandtrails.ca/.

Hiking

There are many hikes in the Rossland Range. From the easy meadow side loops to the sheer hikes that reach the top of mountain summits your reward is always a beautiful wide vista. Here are a few suggested hikes, we'll add more as the summer progresses!

Old Glory Mountain - Nancy Greene Recreation Area
Old Glory Hiking

Old Glory Mountain is a classic day hike set in the rugged hills of the Monashees, just minutes north of Rossland. You can hike to the top of the highest peak of the Rossland Range, which at 7795ft will challenge you physically, yet reward you with the excitement of summiting a mountain.

Enjoy great views of the Valhallas, Kokanee Glacier Park and well into Washington and Idaho.

The Old Glory trail starts in lush wet montane forests (pictured above) which occur in the interior rainforest of B.C. Here, majestic Western Red Cedar and Hemlock are common as the climate is sufficiently wet and mild thus promoting their growth. The undergrowth is lush, with many ferns, wildflowers and shrubs growing above a carpet of mosses. As you follow Hanna creek through subalpine forests and meadows you will find that spruce and fir, mixed with fleabane, valerian and white-flowered rhododendron provide some of the most spectacular scenery and wildflower communities in the region.

The trailhead is shown here on the map approximately 3km north of Red Mountain Resort's turnoff. Park at the P sign on the map. The trail itself is marked 32 with a black diamond. Note: this skill rating is meant for mountain bikers.

Bring plenty of water, a lunch if desired, sturdy footwear and a rain jacket in your pack!

  • Length of loop: 16 km / 10 mi
  • Elevation gain: 1100 m - 3650 ft
  • Hiking time: 7 to 8 hours
  • Difficulty: moderate
