Know Before You Go:
Welcome to your ski or snowboard lesson with Red Mountain Snow School! If you are about to join us for a lesson out on the slopes, there are a couple of things to know before you get here.
- Come dressed to be outside! Lesson participants should come prepared in warm winter jackets, snow pants, mitts or gloves & a face warmer/neck tube. We recommend long ski socks and wool or fleece base layers to wear underneath your clothes. Hand warmers and toe warmers can be purchased in our Piste Off Retail Shop.
- Helmets are mandatory for everyone 18 and under, and highly recommended for everyone 19+. Goggles are recommended to help with snow, sun and wind.
- If you have your own equipment, please ensure it fits before your lesson starts. If you are renting equipment, arrive an hour early to get through the rental shop before your lesson starts.
- All program participants are required to have a lift ticket or season’s pass on them during a lesson.
- Red Mountain Snow School is located in a log cabin between the Magic Carpet and Silverlode Chairlift. Come check in with our Snow School staff 5-10 minutes before your lesson starts and we will show you where to meet your instructor.
- All lessons will start promptly at the scheduled start time. Allow yourself enough time to pick up pre-purchased lift tickets or rental equipment before heading to your lesson.
- Meet your instructor at outside the signed meeting zone/flag approximately 10 minutes before your scheduled lesson. The flag colour corresponds to your ability level (see our Ability Level chart if you are unsure).
- Your lesson will end back in the same location where you started. Please note that all children 12 and under must be picked up at the end of their lesson.

- All lessons must be paid in full at the time of booking.
- Lessons may be refunded or re-booked more than 48 hours in advance with a $25 admin fee per lesson. Any re-booked lesson must be dated within the current season. Preparation:
The AST 1 is an introductory level course. Some AST 1 students are just getting started in the winter backcountry, whereas others have been introduced to the sport through friends and are now ready for their first formal course. Prior to the course start, please:
- Make yourself familiar with the Avalanche Canada website. In particular, please check the latest Bulletin for our region, the Kootenay Boundary.
- You will find several good resources on the “Learn” tab of the AvCan website, particularly the Online Avalanche Tutorial. This gives a detailed look at everything covered in AST1. Some of you might just give it an overview, whereas others could spend a few hours. Any time invested in pre-course learning will enhance your experience when you show up for your AST1 Course.
- It is your responsibility to have all the gear in working order before the course starts. If the gear is new to you (ex. skins, touring bindings, split board, etc) please take the time to become familiar with its use before we head into the field.
- All students are required to sign a waiver at the beginning of day 1 of the course.

For the 2022/23 winter season we will be ramping up our dedication to Freeski by offering a select competitive team for Seniors aged 12-14 and 15-18. This program will run for 14 weekends throughout the winter season, and will also include pre-season dry land training involving gym workouts, gymnastics sessions, and team building outdoor exercise. All athletes will be required to attend a tryout day prior to being accepted on the team, and must be dedicated to progressing in the sport of Freeski and competing in IFSA sanctioned competitions. Coach support is present in dry land training, as well as additional days at 3 IFSA competitions this season. There is also a mandatory Winter Break Camp training session which is included in the program.
We would not be able to run this program without the dedicated support of our athlete parents, and as such require a minimum commitment of 8 hrs of volunteer time. This time will be allocated in our Start-up meeting on October 2nd 2022.
Athletes interested in joining the Freeski team should exhibit the following attributes:
- An overall positive attitude and stoke for progression in Freeski
- Willing to compete in 3 IFSA competitions
- Can ski Link’s Line top to bottom, hitting multiple features, without stopping or falling
- Demonstrate a high technical level of skiing
- Can get controlled airs off natural features, and show style with grabs and spins
- Shows respect for the skill and safety that is required in big mountain freeskiing, in addition to the peers and coaches they work with
